What Parts of a Roof Inspection can I do myself?

hello@p27design.comRoof Problems

It is always recommended that you inspect your roof at least twice in a year. Doing it during the fall and spring seasons will be perfect. These inspections are necessary because they allow you to manage the changing state of your roofs at the right time. In other words, the earlier you notice that something has gone wrong on your roof, the easier it will be to rectify such issues.

Are you already wondering what part of your roof will be safe for you to inspect? Read the rest of the post and find out what you need to know.

Before you begin your inspection, you must first realize that the first place you should look at is your home’s interior. Most anomalies are more visible from within your crawl spaces and attic than they are when viewed externally. So get your torchlight, and start your inspection from the attic.

Roof deck

Here is an excellent place to start your campaign from. Look at the roof deck’s underside. That is the first place that usually develops any issues on any roof. Examine the roof for any possible signs of moisture like mould, streaks, or mildew on the wood. You can also check to find out if there is any sag along the roof.

Check for sunlight

Attics are supposed to be dark when you switch off your lights. But if after shutting off your torchlight, you still find some sunlight rays finding their way into the attic, it should be taken as a definite sign that you need to effect some repairs on your roof.

Examine the Gutters

When you are through with the interior inspection, the next natural place to look at is your exterior. If your roof is in any bad shape on the outside, the first place you see it is in your gutters. When shingles start cracking and breaking, the pieces naturally fall into the gutters. Therefore, whenever you find plenty of shingle pieces in your gutter, then you know that it’s about time some repairs are done.

Examine the colour

It is expected that you are already aware of the colour of your roof before now. However, if you didn’t, now is a good time to take a look at it. And guess what? It is not a difficult thing. Sections of the roof that have darker shingle colouration could be an indication of moisture in the making. Green colouration is a likelihood of algae in operation. You need to urgently address the issue if you notice any of the above instances that were mentioned.

Loose materials

Take a comprehensive look across your roof and check for whatever is looking out of place or even loose. Ensure all ridge caps are adequately secured. You must be 100% sure nothing is appearing free in the event of a breeze blowing.
