TPO Rubber Roofing Problems

hello@p27design.comResidential Roofing

Roofing systems are numerous and the TPO rubber roofing system has turned out to be one of the most popular types. They are also categorized as single ply membrane. TPO is becoming increasingly popular as each day passes. They comprise one layer of synthetics and reinforced scrim that are suitable with flat roofs.

TPO roofing systems are great when it comes to commercial roofs. However, as beneficial as TPO rubber roofs are, they are characterized by four basic problems. I think you should know these problems before investing in them. This article will reel them out one after another.

Membranes Can Be Easily Punctured

This one seems like the scariest of all the TPO roofing problems. Being lightweight and flexible, it is possible to walk on a TPO roof. But somehow, its membrane appears to be weak enough that it can be easily punctured.

The single ply membrane roofing system is not designed to protect the synthetic rubber layer from items like loose screws, dropped tools, or gravels. Such items can quickly find their way into the synthetic rubber membrane, ruining the insulation by creating holes.

Ultraviolet rays damaging the adhesive

Roofing systems are known and designed to experience numerous wear and tear in their lifetime. They do so because theyโ€™re constantly exposed to the weather elements every single minute. That automatically means the roof will be exposed to sunlight as well. That is the worrisome part because sunlight contains UV rays, which can damage the roof.

UV rays can affect a TPO roofing system in various ways. However, the one that is most common is when it begins to reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive on the roofing membrane. When the adhesive is tampered with, the waterproof seal created by the adhesive is also destroyed. Your roof will be highly vulnerable without such seals.

Expired Warranty

As a piece of advice, anytime you are installing a new roof, buy a warranty. That is because many manufacturers prefer their contractor to undertake those repairs during the first few years after the first installation. Warranties can range from between 15 and 30 years. So you can save yourself all the headaches that come with higher repair and maintenance bills when yours expires.

You cannot be too careful with the way you are using your roof because leaks can appear, damages can surface, and your warranty will help you cover for those costs. But, if you insist on paying for such repairs out of your pocket, then that is up to you.

Longevity

The biggest concern you should have about TPO roofing systems is their failure to last long like many other roofing types. TPO roofing looks durable and strong, but we have to admit that the technology is still in its infant stages. TPO roofing as it stands now, is very far from what you will call perfect.

All the problems mentioned here are relatively common and they can be easy to fix. The best way to use TPO roofing systems is to ensure they remain in good shape instead of allowing them to develop major issues along the way.
